Introducing my guest chef Charlie. He is thirteen and loves cooking these lava cakes in Kevin! He also is a brilliant lawn mower, sheep feeder, farmer and all around academic and sports star. I am a strong believer of teaching your kids (no matter what age) how to function in a household. One of the most important things is of course how to navigate your way around a kitchen and cook something edible. I don't think that sending your children out into the big world only knowing how to cook 2 minute noodles is responsible enough! Call me old fashioned but I reckon they should at least be able to make a mean spag bol and cook a schnitzel. Luckily Charlie has enough experience to be able to do all of these things and then some! With just a few pantry ingredients you too can be whipping up these lava cakes (you can substitute the Nutella for peanut butter or jam if you prefer). Here is Charlie's recipe. You can find it in the printable recipe section above.
Charlie has trialed and tweaked his recipe a few times now. All you need is cocoa, flour, brown sugar, butter, eggs, vanilla and milk. And of course Nutella. You also need a piemaker (or you could use a muffin tin) and you need to name it! Ours is called Kevin as most of you would know. Friends have Kanye, Kim, Keith and even Kendall 😂😁😃.
Sift the dry ingredients and make a well in the centre. Melt the butter and add it. Next, crack the eggs straight in and add a teaspoon of vanilla. Give it a good stir.
It may be a little dry so add a tablespoon of milk and stir again. And then pose for a photo for your crazy mother 🤦♀️🤪😀!!!
Next, turn on your piemaker and let it warm up until the green light goes off. Spoon about a dessert spoon in of the mixture into each of the four holes. Dollop a teaspoon of Nutella on top of the mixture (again, you can substitute or peanut butter or jam here).
Working quickly, spoon some more mixture on top to enclose the Nutella. Shut the lid and cook for 4 minutes!
Serve these with ice-cream or double cream just to be extravagant! The molten liquid centres are just delicious.
What sort of meals do you think we should be teaching our kids to cook before they leave home? We are right in the middle of the Corona-virus pandemic at the moment and I am unsure of what the next few months will bring. Have you got a pantry full of staples that you can rely on? How about your protein supply? The next few months are going to be really interesting that is for sure. Happy cooking everyone!
